A migration consists in the transfer of set of data from a given source system (or application) to another one. It can have many reasons:
- The archival and decommissioning of the source system
- The replacement of a system with one offering more functionalities
- End-Of-Life (no more support from the provider)
- An incompatibility of the system or application with a change of the environment
- Information system simplification following a merger or an acquisition
Depending on the complexity of the source and target systems, the volume of data, its variety, the plasticity of the scope of data to be migrated, data ownerships and responsibilities, etc … a migration project can be very complex.
